Info: Costa Maya is south of Cancun and Playa del Carmen On Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and runs along the Caribbean coast almost to the border with Belize. It is located in the state of Quintana Roo. Mahahual (also written as Majahual) is the main population center and the "tourist zone". It was built in 2001 and then rebuilt in 2007 after Hurricane Dean struck. Mahahual was a small fishing village. Because of the small size, Costa Maya and Mahahual has very little crime.
